Eat Your Fetters
Fabifa’s artwork on the twenty-meter wall of the former spy station at Teufelsberg in Berlin addresses the theme of liberation from gender color stereotypes. This large-scale piece, painted in a style reminiscent of tape art, challenges conventional associations with color and promotes a message of freedom and inclusivity.
The mural features a striking image of a person breaking free from chains, symbolizing the act of shedding societal constraints and expectations. The figure, depicted in bold pink, blue, and grey hues, challenges the traditional gendered use of colors. The accompanying text, “Eat Your Fetters,” reinforces the message of breaking free from these constraints, encouraging viewers to embrace individuality and reject limiting stereotypes.
Creating this mural presented significant challenges due to the wall’s asbestos surface and its location on a rooftop. The use of movable scaffolding was necessary, complicating the process and adding a physical challenge for Fabifa. Despite these obstacles, she successfully completed the mural, demonstrating resilience and dedication to her art.
The muse for this wall was Dasha, whose influence and inspiration are evident in the bold and liberating themes of the artwork. Set against the backdrop of Teufelsberg, a site rich with historical significance and a hub for artistic expression, the mural’s message is amplified. The location, a former spy station now turned into an open-air gallery, underscores themes of transformation and liberation.
This piece by Fabifa not only showcases her innovative approach to art but also sparks conversation on important social issues. By inviting viewers to reconsider traditional notions of color and gender, Fabifa’s work promotes a more inclusive and liberated perspective. The mural at Teufelsberg stands as a testament to the power of art in challenging societal norms and advocating for change.
